My Mother
My mum is an artist,
but she doesn’t think so.
My mother has spent her life thinking that she is not intelligent, can’t do anything and has to rely on other people to sort out significant issues. She believed this because she was repeatedly told this by those who were there to support her when she grew up. Teachers, parents and employers. They were not doing anything wrong, as it was a standard theory when she grew up. She had an education and wanted to go on to college but was told that she had to go and get a job and help support the family. It was the belief that once she married, she would be at home and looking after children, so she didn’t need an education.
My mother’s experience is that you never want to play Trivial Pursuit with her as she will always will. She is one of the most intelligent women I have ever met. She travelled across the world with three young children constantly due to my father’s job, and she is one of the most creative people I know.
Your family stories
could change someone’s life forever
The Women’s Oral history project is an ongoing effort to document and celebrate the overlooked stories of women from all walks of life. Our mission is to preserve and share the experiences of women from around the world, in order to build a more inclusive understanding of history. We believe that every woman has a story worth telling, and we are committed to giving voice to the voiceless. Through our online platform, we aim to create a space for women to share their experiences, connect with one another, and inspire positive change.
Women’s Oral history is on a mission to record the untold stories of women from all walks of life. We believe that if we don’t record these stories, they will get lost and we’ll never know what our grandmothers, great grandmothers, aunts, mothers, sisters and daughters have done. By sharing your story about one of the women in your family, you preserve their history and give us all an understanding of how powerful our stories can be. We can learn from them and grow even more proud than before!
